Gas counter pressure

Gas counter pressure moulding is based on the same moulding principle as structural foam moulding, but nitrogen is used to limit the foaming of the material, giving a more elegant surface that most often does not need any paint for optimum visual appearance. Typical material thickness is varying and between 4 and 10 mm.

The moulding process includes creating overpressure with nitrogen before injecting propellant in the process. This creates a material structure in the center of the product that consists of material with internal pores. Because of the nitrogen overpressure, the edge of the product is compact, giving a uniform surface. 




The primary advantage of gas counter pressure moulding is the ability to make lightweight and strong products with large variations in material thickness. The tension in the material is minimized because the process is carried out without holding pressure. At the same time the surface is uniform, which is not the case with structural foam moulding. 

The primary disadvantage is more visible flow lines behind the core than with traditional plastic moulding and structural foam moulding. Also the investment is larger, because the moulding form requires more details, e.g. for O-rings, and dosing equipment for nitrogen must be included.
